‘Cats and dogs’ for the weekend: A look at the animals you might see at the zoo
A cat and a dog are a good match for a zoo’s animals in one of Australia’s largest and most popular animal exhibits, according to the latest booking data.
The Zoo Victoria website shows a large number of guests book a zoo pet to visit during the week, from the kangaroos to the giraffes.
The zoo is also popular with visitors from overseas, with more than 2.6 million visitors in the first three months of this year.
The company’s animal vet Dr Tim Noyes said it was “very unusual” to see so many pets at the Zoo Victoria, given its size.
“The biggest zoo in Australia is about half the size of the average home,” he said.
“We have cats and dogs, which is not unusual.”
“We’re very proud of our zoo and the animal experience, but the dogs and cats are our biggest draw.”
A number of pets are also on the zoo’s travel and entertainment lists.
The first dog in the zoo is a black lab mix, named Kite, which arrived in Australia in April 2017.
It has been kept for the past six months in a crate in the waiting room at the Zoological Gardens of Victoria.
Dr Noyez said Kite was not in a condition to travel to the zoo.
He said zoo visitors would see it in the Zoo Melbourne, the world-famous Australian Zoo, which opened in 2006.
“There’s a lot of good zoo-goers in Australia,” Dr Noys said.
He did not have an estimate on how many pets were in the Zoologics and Zoo Victoria’s pet queue.
“I would say it’s a very small percentage of the total number of animals that are being brought in.”
He said he could not speculate on how much the animals would cost to feed and house.
“They don’t all have to be in cages, it’s just a way of keeping animals alive in the environment,” he added.
Zoo vet Dr Nick Renton said he had seen animals on other exhibits including the giant anteater at the Great Barrier Reef, and was happy to see that at the moment there was a lot more choice.
“These are all natural animals, but it’s the ones that are natural that get the most attention,” he told news.com.au.
“People love the animals and they like the zoo, so there’s lots of choice.”
Dr Renton, a former veterinary assistant to the Australian Royal Commission into the death of a koala, said it had been difficult for the zoo to find a way to keep up with demand for animals.
He was unsure if the zoo would ever expand to include other species.
“This is a small part of the zoo but it has a big impact on the environment and the animals in it,” he explained.
“In a zoo, you have to do a lot to keep animals in a good condition.”
